To know if you are risk for CKD, you should ask yourself the following questions:
1. Do I have diabetes?
2. Do I have high blood pressure (hypertension)?
3. Do I have family members (i.e., mother, father, sister, brother) with kidney disease?
If you have a positive response to any of the three questions, you are at risk for CKD.
Know the Risk Factors for CKD
- African Americans
- People 50 years and older
- Diabetics
- High blood pressure (Hypertension)
- Heart disease
- Kidney disease in the family
- Blockages (urinary track system; blood clots or plaques of cholesterol that block the kidney vessels; repeated kidney stones).
- Drug Use (heroin or cocaine)
- Inflammation
- Existence of certain disease (lupus, AIDS, cancer, sickle cell and or congestive heart failure)
- Premature baby
Know What You Should Do If You Are At Risk
If you are at risk for CKD:
- See your doctor
- Ask your doctor to test you for CKD
Test to determine if you are risk for CKD include:
- Serum Creatinine
- Urine Protein
- Blood Pressure
