The Burden of Diabetes in Georgia***

Overall Prevalence:

  • 700,000 adults aged 18 years and older (10.1% of the Georgia adult population) had been diagnosed with diabetes (2007). *
  • The cases for diabetes is increasing in Georgia due to the rise in obesity, unhealthy eating habits and physical inactivity. **

Prevalence for Blacks:
  • 133,500 Blacks (8.7%) were diagnosed as diabetic in 2002, compared to 6.3% white; 6.9% hispanic during the same time period.***

Rating as Leading Cause of Death:
  • In 2006, diabetes was the seventh leading cause of death in Georgia.**

Mortality:
  • The overall age-adjusted diabetes death rate per 100,000 in 2006 was 1.3 times higher in men than women.*
  • From 1999 through 2006, the Northeast regions of Georgia tend to have the higher age – adjusted diabetes mortality than thestatewide average.*
  • In 2006, pre-mature deaths in Georgia due to diabetes were hightest among blacks (53.7%), followed by white males (41.1%), black females (33.0%), and white females (26.6%).**

Hospitalization Rate:

  • In 2006, there were 15,593 hospitalizations for which diabetes was the principal diagnosis, resulting in over $288 million hospital charges and about 78,346 days or 215 years of hospital stay. *
  • In 2006, 19,459 emergency room visits were attributed to diabetes. *

Health Care Costs
  • The health care cost for a diabetic in Georgia is approximately $11, 744 per year compared to a non-diabetic whose cost is $5, 095 per year.**
  • Diabetes costs Georgia over $5.1 billion in medical care per year.*
