  • An estimated 1.8 million persons aged 18 years and older have been diagnosed with diabetes.*
  • An estimated 460,040 persons aged 18 years and older in Texas are believed to be undiagnosed.*
  • In Texas, the rate of diabetes is higher among women than men.*
  • The prevalence of diabetes is highest among person who have no high school diploma at 15.8% compared to those who have a college degree which is 6.9%.**
  • The prevalence of diabetes in Texas based on sex in persons 18 and older is as follows:**

  • Diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death in Texas**
  • In 2005, the diabetes mortality rate for Texas was 30 deaths per 100,000 persons.**

  • An estimated 1.3 million persons aged 18 years and older in Texas (7.9 percent of this age group) have been diagnosed with diabetes.*
  • Another estimated 418,134 persons aged 18 years and older in Texas are believed to have undiagnosed diabetes*
  • The total for both diagnosed and undiagnosed diabetes is 1,739,437.*
  • Diabetes is the sixth leading cause of death in Texas*
  • It is the fourth leading cause among African Americans and Hispanics.*
  • Hospital discharge data tell us that counties along the Texas-Mexico border have higher diabetes-related amputation rates than non-border counties – 8.3 per 100,000*
  • Texas has seen a steady increase in diabetes from 2000 through 2005, with prevalence rising from 6.2 percent (927,834) to 7.9 percent (1,325,244) — a 27 percent increase.*
  • Since 1998, prevalence rates for non-Hispanic blacks have been increasing at a higher rate than rates for Hispanics and non- Hispanic whites.*
  • An estimated one in every 400 to 600 Texas children and adolescents has type 1 diabetes. It is the second most prevalent chronic disease of childhood after asthma. *
