The National Medical Association (NMA) Vision Focus Initiative is supported by the 2010 Healthy Vision Community Award received from by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services under the National Eye Institute (NEI) and the National Eye Health Education Program. It also serves as an expansion to the association’s NMA Diabetes Education Program. The purpose of the NMA Vision Focus Initiative is to educate diabetic patients about the importance of having an annual dilated eye examination, and to take steps TODAY to control glucose levels to avoid developing diabetic retinopathy.

The contents of this Tool Kit will introduce you to some educational materials available from that National Eye Institute (NEI), National Eye Health Education Program (NEHEP) and other reputable sources on diabetes management; and increase your knowledge about diabetic retinopathy. All diabetics are encouraged to share any learned information about diabetes management, control methods and important tests such as a dilated eye examination with their primary care doctor.
